Crime Wave

Here is a map of 414 crimes in Halifax assembled from the Halifax open data site. The data description is

Points that represent crimes that have occurred in HRM within the last 7 days. Includes the type of crime, the date of the crime and the general location (the location of the point is not the true location of the crime, but a generalization to protect the victims).

I guess HRM is worried that the full picture of crime (more than a week) might be unsettling.  So I started to assemble the data back in June, intending to update once a month.  I missed August, and have just resumed (September 10). This represents 3 weeks worth - It's unclear whether the data changes every day or every week (or on some other timetable), but these are unduplicated events.

Yellow balloons are property crimes and orange balloons are some form of assault.  Red balloons are crimes occurring in clusters of 5 or more (6 locations, 38 crimes).  Some of the crimes have been given the exact same coordinates by the police, so their markers are hidden behind other markers.  All 7 assaults on Gloria McClusky Avenue in Burnside are in exactly the same spot, as are the thefts on Riverside Drive.

The types of crimes are:

Dates are:

Just under 20 crimes a day on average.
And locations with 5 crimes and over are:

Because they aren't very precise, the locations are not very interesting, except for the mini crime wave on Mason's Point Road.  You're pretty safe in HRM, and even the high crime areas aren't so much, though you should always lock your car.
